Tomorrow I'm off to Stockholm again: bloggers event, design week, furniture fair... busy and inspiring days ahead! Follow me on Instagram if you want (anna_g).

Meanwhile, here comes some inspiration in black and grey - a nice and calming combination, even more beautiful with a touch of wood.

New York International Gift Fair

The main reason for the trip to NYC this past week was to attend the New York International Gift Fair. Although I've attended gift shows in the past, this was my first "big" show and I wanted to see if I could find some new items to broaden the selection in my shop.  Here are a few booths that I drooled over - As you'll notice they are more decor related (what can I say, I'm a decor nut) but I did find some little gift items to bring into the store later in February. With me came my Mom, and Elise - a longtime friend who now lives in NYC but a few years back interned for me.

[PICTURES ABOVE] [1] Spoon Chandelier via Cake. (Picture taken by Elise) [2] Uncle Goose Toys are ridiculously gorgeous. I'm sure I've seen their stuff around before but after seeing the products in person I'm obsessed [3] BlaBla dolls will always be a favourite of mine - I loved how they were all displayed on the wall [4] The entire line (bedding and clothing) by Roberta Roller Rabbit  made my heart skip a beat. [5] Dash and Albert Poufs. Need I say more? [6] This print Fairhope Graphics caught my eye. Beautiful for a nursery.

[7] Jonathan Adler always brings to the table awesome colourful designs - I wanted to walk away with that turtle stool! [8] I first noticed Barr-Co. in Chapters here in Toronto and have since been a fan of their packaging and branding [9] Uncle Goose Alphabet Blocks appeal to the typography nut in me. I'd love to pick this up for our house for a coffee table decor - it's just awesome. [10.] I always wanted the Jonathan Adler giraffe lamp for Oscar's room but it was always too expensive for me to justify, but I loved how they paired the lamp with the bright table.

Anyhow, those are some of the booths that I loved at the show. I'll post more of the exploring I did in the city next week. xo Linds

Home from New York

I'm back from New York - it was amazing. We visited with friends, shopped the gift show, did some sight seeing, saw a Broadway play. We packed a lot into a short period of time. The weather was perfect - even the occasional rainfall seemed beautiful. I just flew in this afternoon, and I am playing catch up with some work and obviously cuddling Oscar a lot so I'll post about the gift show, sight seeing and just some touristy stuff maybe tomorrow. Or maybe just next week. Anyways, I'm glad to be home - but I think I've caught the travel bug now. ;) xo Linds

Ps. The above photo was shot while in a cab on the first day.

Bright Kitchen Inspiration

Remember last week when I shared a collection of my favorite neon kitchen accessories to amp up your kitchen's style? Well, my obsession with neon kitchens couldn't just stop there. It's like an itch that I just can't scratch. I love bright decor!

Here are some beautiful kitchens and dining rooms that are just as bright as my favorite accessories. I'm in love.

Last night I added these stunning ceramics by Kajsa Cramer to the shop. I had an immediate crush on her vases and candleholders in porcelain clay when I first spotted them, and I think that those who saw them at the pop-up store in Paris last November agree with me! Well, finally available online as well.

But what I really wanted to show you here on the blog, were these beautiful photos from her studio in Sweden - equally soothing and creative...

... et dans la boutique vous trouverez ces trois modèles qui peuvent tous servir de vase, pot ou photophore!

... and in the shop you'll find these three sizes that can all be used as a vase, pot or candleholder!

The pleasure and pain of owning dogs

The pleasure & pain of owning dogs

As an owner of two rescued dogs, I've often been asked by friends if we'd recommend them to do the same. And for most we say the same thing: Dogs are wonderful to have, but they're also a lot of hard work. They'll change your life forever, and you need to be ready for that change.

I've been thinking about this more and more lately, since we've recently moved into a house with a fenced in backyard, making our lives with dogs much, much easier.

But at the beginning it was not so easy.

To anyone thinking of getting a dog, here are what I consider the pains and pleasures of owning dogs.

Pains:
  • If you want a puppy, be prepared for the hard work ahead of you. Make sure you have enough money to spend on things like training and vet visits. And have the patience to continue training the dog even after she's eaten five pairs of your favorite shoes.
  • Two words. Potty training.
  • Needing to walk the dog multiple times a day in the cold, heat or rain. And don't forget picking up the poop! Hubby and I would actually fight over who's turn it was to take the dogs out for their walks...more than once.
  • Dogs make traveling hard. For every vacation you need to plan $$ for the boarder as well. This eats up a vacation budget pretty quickly.
  • Dogs also make being spontaneous difficult. No crashing at a friends house after a night of drinking or picking up and flying to Vegas for the weekend without planning ahead and dropping the dogs off at the boarder.
  • Thousands of dollars lost from clothes & home goods turned to chew toys.
  • Finding pet friendly housing (if renting) and pet friendly neighbors. Hubby and I got evicted after we first saved Roxy as she had separation anxiety and whined during the daytime hours. Our elderly neighbors didn't appreciate the whining during their nap time...
  • Your belongings (even your clothes!) are always covered in dog hair! I need to sweep our floors at least twice a week just to keep up.

Pleasures:
  • I know it is cliche, but dogs provide you with unconditional love. They're always excited to see you.
  • You'll always have a cuddle buddy & a comforting puppy kiss if you need it.
  • They say owning a dog has a ton of health benefits like reduced stress, reduced blood pressure and increased happiness.
  • Dog owners are typically more fit than not, as you have a constant running or walking partner.
  • Dogs can help you to be more social and make new friends. People often strike up conversations when their dogs meet on the street or in dog parks. You never know who you'll meet!
  • Dogs can help you to become a better person - through training them, you'll learn patience and selflessness. Patience was something that I learned a lot from my two dogs!
  • And lastly, they really are adorable.
Pretty Puppies

Now, while the number of pains are greater than the pleasures, I do think those pleasures make it all worth it. If you're in a position that you're able to provide the dog with what he or she needs, and you're willing to put in the hard work required to be a good parent then I would recommend getting a dog to anyone that asked.

Maybe just skip the puppy stage....

When Hubby Says No, and Other Home Staging Problems

To plot to not to plot?

Your questions help me help you. Whether the questions come through email, blog comments, Facebook, or friends, they tell me what nitty-gritty dilemmas people face when they want to sell a house.

Here are some of the questions I’ve received lately, and my answers.

Let Garden Grow?

Q: We have a 12- by 12-foot vegetable garden in our rather small backyard. Is a garden like this an asset or a liability when it’s time to sell?

A: Most people want an easy-care or no-maintenance yard. But the idea of a small vegetable plot is still appealing to many people, especially during the growing season. If you want to keep the garden while your home is on the market, keep it tidy during any off-season, and consider adding hardscape like stepping stones, attractive fencing, and birdhouses.

During the growing season, keep it free of weeds, mulch it, and make it look abundant. "Staged" this way, it becomes a selling point.

If your buyers decide they don’t want a garden, they can always convert a reasonably-sized garden into lawn, or use the space as a basis for something else, like a patio, above ground pool, play area, or dog run.

Storm Door or Not?

A handsome storm door that functions well
will add value to your home.
Q: Our house has a storm door over the front door. It keeps out the cold in winter, and converts to a screen door in summer, so we like it. But I don’t think it looks great. Should we remove it?

A: If the storm door hides a pretty front door and seriously detracts from curb appeal, I’d consider removing it. Or I’d remove it if it’s a dated style and your home is fairly up-to-date otherwise. If the door does become history, you’ll want to putty and paint over the screw holes in the trim around the door.

In the interest of curb appeal, some home sellers remove the storm door while the home is for sale, and store it so it can be replaced if the new buyers want it.

The right storm and screen door won't be an eyesore. Can you replace the door with a new one that is contemporary and really helps with the way a home shows?

If you do replace a storm door, make sure its character is in keeping with your home's innate style.

Make sure the glass stays clean, and that the darn thing doesn't bang the heels of people entering, one of my personal pet peeves.

Uncooperative Spouse

Q: My husband doesn’t believe we should spend money on staging. Any advice?

A: Instead of pleading or nagging, enlist the aid of your realtor. Any realtor will be able to give statistics and stories about homes that didn’t sell because they were not staged, and success stories of homes that were effectively staged.

I give more tips on how to be deal with a partner who doesn’t see the value of staging, in my eBook, DIY Home Staging Tips to Sell Your Home Fast and for Top Dollar.

Big Home Small Budget

Staging a large home after you've moved can be daunting, but there are a few alternatives.
Q: I’m selling a large, vacant house. If I can’t spend money to “do it right,” should I skip it?

A: This is a common quandary. The best advice I can offer is to do what you can.

One possibility is that you can omit an entire section of the house, such as the second floor, or a basement. Concentrate on making the necessary living quarters – at least one bedroom, one bath, the living room and the kitchen – as well-staged as possible.

The downside of the partial staging solution is that buyers may think you’ve moved to your next home, and are therefore even more desperate to sell and willing to entertain low ball offers. You can let your realtor know that you’ve staged the house the way some builders will stage a model home.

If you do decide to leave the home vacant, be sure everything is spotless and in great condition. Paint the walls and trim if necessary and have the entire house smelling good.

Do you have a question about home staging? I'd love to hear from you!

Maison&Objet

I've finally had the time to sort my photos from Maison&Objet! As I was part of the jury for the award Les Découvertes, I spent most of my time in hall 6 - Home accessories/Moving, the area that had been assigned to me. Besides my design crush to which I gave my award, here are some other nice finds that I also made along the way...
