DIY (long) weekend projects

DIY Weekend Projects

Who's ready for the long weekend? I know I am! Here are a few fun DIY projects that I've been eying lately.

1 // Modern House Numbers // One of my new favorite blogs, 4 Men 1 Lady, showed off how they DIY'ed this modern look for house numbers USING PAINT STICKS! What?!  I love it!

2 // Funky Framed Floor Mirror // I've got an extra floor mirror laying around and what to do something fun with it. This looks $500+ West Elm mirror looks like some awesome inspiration. What do you think? Totally DIY'able.

What are you up to this long holiday weekend?

Decorating the home with Etsy....

I was pretty excited when Etsy asked me to guest curate for their e-mail this week. Wheee! I chose the theme of "Decorating the home with Etsy" as I've bought a ton of stuff for my home from sellers on the site, which you likely know if you have read my blog for awhile. You can see their e-mail here but I've also put everything into a collection for you to see should you be intrigued. ;) I think one of my favourite picks were these awesome plates from Yvonne Ellen in the UK. Wouldn't these be awesome hung in a dining room or framed a-la Sarah Richardson in a bedroom? Anyhow, back to sanding some wood tree stumps while Oscar naps. Coundown to the wedding is on!

Inspired by a GREEN bed

Now that you know our Master Suite remodeling plans that's quickly approaching, you understand my excitement around decorating our new spaces!

I've decided to try and tackle the Master Bedroom decor first, leaving the more difficult bathroom design for later.

I thought it would be easy to come up with a style for our bedroom, but I'm wavering between several different styles and can't decide what I'll want to live with for a couple of years. I change my design style so frequently, it's hard to commit. So I'll be creating a few different mood boards and then will (one day in the future) compare them against each other to make a final decision.

You've already seen my first mood board created last week with my inspiration stemming from a gorgeous bed from CB2. And today I'm inspired by yet another gorgeous bed.

Note: Let's all use our imagination and pretend that all of the browns in the mood board are black. KThanks.
Inspired by a Bed
1 // Kelly Green Bed // Ever since Agent Walkers bedroom on the TV show Chuck, I've been dreaming of a green headboard. I mean, how gorgeous is this one!? (Side note: Come to find out that Agent Walker's bedroom was actually a room at The Viceroy in Santa Monica. WHY did I never get to stay in that room in all the times I've stayed there?!? Seriously.)

2 // Black and Grey Feature Wall // What better way to dial up the drama than with a black & grey feature wall behind the bed? Rather than taking the time (and money) to do wallpaper, I'd opt for stenciling.

3 // All White Furniture // To keep the focus on the bed and feature wall, all of my furniture from nightstands to dressers would be white, with very clean and modern lines.

4 // To Chandelier or not to Chandelier // I'm still torn on having a chandelier in our master since our ceiling is a little low, but if I decide to have one, this one is a looker!

5 // Modern Artwork // The remaining three bedroom walls would be white, so I'd use modern black & white artwork similar to this piece to balance out the room.  (Yes, I said similar. Don't worry mom, I'm not going to be spending $900 on artwork....)

6 // Striped Storage Bench // I'd like to put a storage bench at the foot of our bed, and I have every bit of faith that this black and white striped bench would look amazing with the green!

7 // White Table Lamp // Since the lamps will be seen against the black focal wall and next to the green headboard, I think it would best for them to be all white.

8 // Green Pillow // I'd plan to add in small pops of kelly green throughout the room to match with the bed and further tie the room together.

9 // Black and White Vase // And the remainder of the accents throughout the room would be a very classic black and white like this vase!

What do you think? The perfect amounts of dramatic?

Kitchen inspiration from Oliver & Bonacini

I'm not completely loving the look of our eat in kitchen area right now. (Shown above) It's silly as it truly is quite nice. However a few things are rubbing me the wrong way. The table is a tone of wood I don't like - but on the flip side, the shape and size of the table is perfect for our home. I've looked into having it stripped and stained a new colour - but the price to do that is way out of our budget. Next - the chairs match the table, but aren't all that comfy nor do they look great. The light we have hanging above the table I think is going soon (I'll probably sell it) and I have my eye on one but it is pretty expensive - so we'll see how it plays out. All of this to explain that the eat in kitchen has been on my mind.

I had a girls day with my Mom today and we had lunch at Oliver & Bonacini's restaurant at Bayview Village. Partway through the lunch I turned to my left and looked at the above vignette and fell in love. I loved the gray with white trim, and that dark wood. And the chairs - oh, the chairs.

They were a gorgeous gray and they were comfy to sit in. I've fallen in love.

Aren't they beautiful? So the bathroom isn't done, so I'm not about to take on a new project (just yet) but I thought it was interesting where you can find inspiration - I'm now on the hunt for these chairs, and I'm now considering painting my wood table dark grey. I think it will be a budget way to get an amazing look. Anyhow, really this post is to show you the gorgeous restaurant. :) (And if you know where to get those chairs I'll hug you)

Master Bedroom Renovation

Hi friends! Today's a big day because I've got renovation plans to start sharing with you.

While I haven't posted a To Do List update in quite some time, most of you know that we've got a pretty big remodel in our near future. We've been planning on this remodel for almost a year, but wanted to wait until we're done marathon training before diving into such a big undertaking - and that day is almost here!

Last weekend, Justin & I spent much of our Friday night & Saturday planning and drafting out our Master Bedroom remodel, and I want to share them with you!

To give you some context, here's what our room looks like currently with square boxes showing where dressers and bookshelves are placed around the gigantic room. It's one, big, loft-style room right now with no door and no wall between us and the rest of the house. Meaning = very temporary.

Now, don't forget where this room started less than a year ago. This space used to be two rooms; our living room + "master" bedroom, with a wall straight down the center - but we tore down the wall and opened the space up when we moved back to MN last year! Check out more on this preliminary remodel project on my post back in November here.

So after all that pretext, here's our vision for post-renovation.

Reno_Master 2D2
And here's it in 3D. Note: The 3D rendering is a little wonky since it forced me to put a wall up at the top of the stairs, but that will ACTUALLY be a teeny-tiny landing at the top of the stairs (to follow code) then a sliding door opening into the bedroom.
Reno_Master Bed_3DI'm equal parts excited and super-duper nervous for this renovation. Justin & I will be doing almost everything ourselves, sans plumbing and electrical work. Lucky for me he's a talented carpenter, and unlucky for me that I'm not (oh...and that there's only two of us!!).

But I honestly can't wait for the day that I don't have to trek down the stairs in the middle of the night for a pee break. Seriously.

Getting me equally excited is the design work and DIY projects that are to come with this renovation! I've already started developing a few mood boards for potential bedroom designs like this one (and a couple more on their way).

And I haven't even started thinking about the bathroom design yet! Oh, the possibilities!!

I'll of course keep y'all updated along the way. There will be lots of blood, sweat and tears (mostly tears on my part, I'm sure) that will be thrown into this renovation and you're coming along for the ride.

It's Giveaway Time

    druzy necklaces

When I was pregnant with Oscar in 2009 I spontaneously purchased a necklace (above) that quickly became a favourite piece in my jewelry collection. It looks like a gold nugget and sits flat against my chest. The necklace chain is so thin that it almost disappears against my skin making the nugget look like it is floating on my neck.

I have fond memories of buying it - When I was pregnant I was pretty bummed out a lot of the time. I was sick my entire pregnancy and gained a lot of weight. Nothing fit, and if something did fit, I just didn't feel pretty*. So when this necklace arrived I remember feeling like I had something special on. Four years later it is still one of my favourite pieces. I wear it all the time- it is discrete enough that I can wear it with a t-shirt (as I am below) or it can come off as a statement piece when paired with a more formal outfit. At $80 it was pretty expensive for such a wee piece, but it has definitely gotten a lot of mileage in my wardrobe.

A few months ago I spotted a similar necklace on Etsy and the term they used in the description was "Druzy". I was pretty excited because my beloved necklace was available in so many different colours. After searching Etsy more for "Druzy necklaces" I came across a ton of necklaces much like my own and unfortunately for me - all at much better prices than what I had paid. Although you can search Etsy for Druzy pieces I've put a few of my favourites, including the ones above, on this page.  I have a few in my own cart, and I'm waiting for a moment to buy some more.

I think this is maybe why I love jewelry so much - A perfect piece can make you feel pretty when the nicest of clothes can't. It won't shrink in the wash, or get too small if your badonkadonk gets too big because of a baby. ;)

    * Those 9 months were obviously worth it for my sweet little Oscar.
    * Here is a discussion on what the term Druzy means I was in the dark about this term.
    * Unfortunately I can't recall the website that I bought my necklace from in 2009 :(
*Some write it as Druzy (as I have) and others write Drusy. Do you know which is right?

    Formex

I hope you've had a great summer! As you might have noticed, I took some time off... After having spent some family time in Sweden these last few weeks, I'm back in Paris since last night only to repack my bags and leave for Copenhagen tomorrow!

My stay in Sweden was not all about vacation, I also did some work... Like a quick trip to Stockholm to visit the Formex fair for example! Goal: fill up on inspiration and find some new products for the shop.

You might have seen quite a few pictures from Formex already on the Scandinavian blogs so I won't bore you with a complete review of the fair... But in case you haven't or still want more, here are my impressions and favourites from the fair!

To sum up, I saw copper absolutey EVERYWHERE, quite a lot of brass, lots of sober grey but also eclectic and colorful areas ("Eclectic touch" was the theme of this Formex btw), and many products in wood and rattan. I didn't see anything really innovative, but I did find a few nice things.

House Doctor showed lots of nice products as usual, but this year their booth was much more airy, light and inspiring than previous years (the 1st photo in this post is also from their booth).

La marque suédoise Tell me more était une nouvelle connaissance dont j'ai beaucoup aimé les coussins tricotés et les bougies parfumés avec leurs boites graphiques.
Swedish brand Tell me more was a new acquaintance and I really liked the knitted cushions and the sented candles with graphic boxes.

Des très beaux coussins chez Linum aussi.
    Great cushions from Linum too.

Danish brand H. Skjalm P. launched vases, pots and trays in trendy materials: copper, brass and marble.

Katarina Stark has created a great collection of vases+watering can which was nominated to the Formex Formidable award.

Des nouveaux motifs graphiques chez 10-gruppen.
    New graphic patterns from 10-gruppen.

New collection of tableware by Kajsa Cramer (I love her work!)

The patchwork blankets from RioRio were nominated to the Formex Formidable award.

House of Rym associe savoir-faire tunisien et design scandinave (j'en ai déjà parlé ici) dans une jolie collection de "mix and match".
House of Rym combines Tunisian craftmanship with Scandinavian design (I've already written about them here) in a pretty "mix and match" collection.

New table lamp in concrete by Tove Adman - simple and beautiful.

In the Young Designers area I found this nice and surprisingly comfortable stool created by Patrik Nilsson.

In the same area: a stunning hat-lamp created by Bymars. The photo in the booth was almost as beautiful as the lamp itself.

I'm still a fan of Jollygoodfellow's graphic simplicity.

Des petits meubles astucieux par Hilal Bayazit.
Smart small furniture by Hilal Bayazit.

Ylva Skarp never disappoints and presented some great new prints.

Danish brand Menu had an inspiring booth filled with great products like the fabulous Flip around table, nominated for the Formex Formidable award as well.
