DIY Weekend Projects

DIY Weekend Projects

I think I love wallpaper. I'm not completely decided yet, but I think I do. I know there's a stigma against wallpaper because everyone rips it down when they purchase a house, and people's styles are always different, but I'm really thinking I want to wallpaper a room in our house. Or maybe just a wall.

I've tried the alternative to wallpapering - stenciling - and I did terrible at it. Absolutely horrific. More on that next week... But, wallpaper. What do you guys think? Is it a yay or a nay (understanding that we're hoping to sell our house in the next couple years).

Graphic paintings

J'ai d'abord vu ces photos sur le blog de Frida...

First I saw these pictures on Fridas blog...

Puis, j'ai vu celle-ci...

Then I saw this one....

Et celle-ci, avec ce tableau sur la gauche...

And this one, with that painting to the left...

Et maintenant je ressens le besoin de créer mes propres toiles en noir & blanc... Un projet DIY pour ce weekend, ca vous dit?

And now I feel the need to make my own black & white paintings... A DIY project for the weekend, anyone?

valentine's day table setting

I love, love Valentine's Day. I've always thought it was a sweet holiday but since having Oscar I think I've just become a tad obsessed with it. It's just such a pretty holiday and all about love - if you remove any pressure to buy gifts (Aubrey and I don't buy gifts for one another) and just have fun, it's a pretty fun day to celebrate. We're going to have a Valentine's Day dinner so I've been putting together some ideas. It all revolved around stripes - including these GORGEOUS candles from Ana' Candles that I got shipped from their website (although I think I've seen them in retail stores here in Toronto) Mixed with florals in varying vases, they look beautiful in varying heights of candlestick holders.

Next up, I decided to wrap my table napkin for the place setting in pink washi tape and, finished off with a brooch from the shop. Simple and sweet, but a little takeaway for each guest. I do love this holiday.

Just some Valentine's Day inspiration from me, to you.

Shop the Room: Master Bedroom

Now that our new Master Bedroom is nearly complete and I've shared all of our individual DIY projects that make up the room over the last couple of months, I figured it was time to share the whole package together in one post.

I shared a Shop the Room post for our Living Room when we were nearing the end of our updates, and it's been one of my favorite posts - rounding up all of the DIY Projects and sources that make up a room.

So let's shop our Master Bedroom!

Shop the Room Master Bedroom

Shop the Living Room Painting

1 // Solaris Chandelier // One of my favorite parts of the room is our new Solaris Chandelier from Crystorama. It really brings a level of elegance to the room.

2 // DIY Art Collection // These simple pieces of DIY Art took me a total of 45 minutes to paint - and took little to no talent to achieve! And I  love the way they bring some pops of color into the room.

3 // DIY Tufted Plank Headboard // I shared the How-To on this beautiful piece yesterday, and boy do I love how it turned out. I took a $500+ designer style and DIY'ed it for only $115.

4 // DIY Painted Table Lamps // This was an excruciating decision to make, but I'm happy I decided to spray paint my favorite lime green lamps to match our new color palette. I'd hate to have these pretty things sitting in storage because they were the wrong color.

5 // A bed full of pillows // I've never had a whole bed full of pillows before, and boy was I missing out! I'm in love with all of these pillows, from the oversized navy pillows from Ikea (not available online), to my grey, chevron patterned pillows (sold out, similar here) to my Every Day I'm Hustlin' Pillow.

6 // Patterned Area Rug // I'm in LOVE with my Tuscan La Bella patterned rug from RugsUSA.com. Cheers to 50% + Free Shipping!

7 // DIY Abstract Artwork // This piece of artwork was so much fun to paint, and anyone could do it! I gave a few tips & tricks on how I painted it one cold, wintery night.

8 // Behr "Sterling" Paint // I've had a few questions so far on what paint color this is, so now you have it! We absolutely love how it looks with the white baseboard and accents. It's the perfect shade of grey for this room.

And just for the heck of it, let's look at where this room started.

Master Bedroom Before

Here's what our second floor looked like before we removed the wall. As context this used to be the teeny tiny living room (see the stairs on the bottom right?) and through the doorway was a teeny tiny master bedroom that only fit a full sized bed. Not very master...

Master Bedroom During Remodel

And here's what it looked like after we ripped the wall down.

IMG_5852

While preparing and saving up for our remodel, we used the newly opened second floor only for our master bedroom. We loved the huge, open space (with room for a king bed!) but didn't enjoy the loft-style layout. We didn't have a wall or door to the downstairs!

We also made-do with our apartment style decor until we had our remodeling plan and I could start to put together a few mood boards with design decisions.

Master Bedroom After

Here are our beautiful after photo for the bedroom now that we're wrapping up our remodel. We absolutely love it.

And within the next few months I'll be sharing photos of our brand new Master Bathroom that's currently in the works!

Master Bedroom Details

So what's our status in the room? We're about 80% done with the master bedroom (and about 15% done with the master bathroom + closet). Next things on the docket? Building new nightstands that look similar to this, finishing up my Book Nook, and building X-Leg Benches for the end of the bed.

Formex part 2

In the category better late than never, here comes the 2nd part of my summary from Formex! You can see the 1st part here.
Globally, nature seemed to have invaded the fair, with lots of greenery everywhere. I saw vintage colored glass in green and amber, lots of ceramics as well as marble and other stones. A bit less copper than at the last fair, but quite a lot of brass. The graphic patterns are still there, but also more ethnic and floral ones. I saw more colour than the last time, maybe a sign of a certain general optimisme? Besides the greens, there was also blue, yellow and coral, and still quite a lot of pastels.

How to build a Focal Wall Headboard

Have you seen our new master bedroom yet??

I'm completely joking. I've shared this master bedroom reveal more in the last month than y'all can probably handle...but I'm not done yet! Today I'm showing the last piece of work that we've done in the master bedroom to date.  But don't you worry. I have a couple more master bedroom projects in my back pocket.

And today, as part of the Look for Less Design Challenge series with six other wonderful bloggers, I'm sharing this beautiful Focal Wall Headboard.

How to build a focal wall headboard

Yup, that's right. The team's back again with this quarter's Look for Less Design Challenge.

Look for Less Design Challenge

While searching for bedroom inspiration, I found this beautiful bedroom on Houzz and knew I needed to make a focal wall headboard just like this one.

Houzz Grey Headboard Bedroom

It's so bold in a classic and clean way, which I love. While I don't know the exact cost of this headboard because the photographer doesn't know the source, I was able to find a Panel Tufted Headboard from West Elm ($449) and this Modloft Prince Platform Bed from Wayfair ($1,450) that look really similar to the look I was going for. So from a cost comparison perspective, I feel like this focal wall, panel tufted headboard from my Houzz inspiration was probably around $600-750.

And boy oh boy, can we DIY that for a whole lot less!

How to Build a Focal Wall Headboard

First step for us was sketching out a general plan for our headboard. We like to be flexible during furniture construction with dimensions and the overall building plan. Since construction is what that Justin does for a living, he often times thinks up new, innovative ways to complete a project that isn't even close to what we had originally planned, but almost always better than our original plan. This project was no different.

Based on the dimensions of our bedroom, we estimated the width of our focal wall (I wanted our headboard to be nearly the entire length of the wall). I also knew I wanted to hang my DIY Artwork above the bed, so we determined our headboard height based on saving space for those framed prints.

Here's what we ended up with:
Nine, seperately upholstered planks; three 76" x 14", and six 24" x 14"

Focal Headboard Plans

Step 1:

Cut the individual planks that make up the focal wall headboard. We decided to build the headboard planks with MDF to ensure that they wouldn't warp over time.

Cutting the Headboard MDF

Step 2:

Upholster the planks with batten. I've never upholstered anything before, so kind of I learned as I went but I think it turned out really well!

I started with Soft & Crafty batten which I purchased pre-packaged from Joann Fabrics for about $30, which I wrapped around the front of each plank and secured in place with our soffit stapler.

Tip: If you have a soffit stapler, I'd highly recommend using that instead of a hand stapler. This way was much easier on my muscles.

Stapling the Batting

Step 3:

Then it was time to prep the fabric. I measured, cut and ironed my pretty grey and gold fabric I also found at Joann Fabrics for $7.50/yard (which I purchased with my 30% off coupon). I ended up spending only $36 on fabric.

I purchased this fabric because it was a perfect shade of grey, a little thicker, but not the $44/yard furniture fabric that I couldn't afford in my headboard budget. The awesome gold of this fabric won't show in the headboard but you may just be seeing it in a future project. Wink wink.

Pretty Gold Fabric

The fabric was extra wrinkly from being folded up on the bolt in the store, so I took my time ironing all the fabric and making sure it was pristine. Then clamped it onto the planks (to hold it in place) so I could start stapling it on to the MDF.

Ironing Fabric
Clamping Fabric

And here's what it looked like on the back once I had I had the batten & the fabric stapled down.

Upholstered Headboard Planks
Fabric Corners

And here's how beautiful the plank looked like from the front.

Upholstered Plank Horizontal

Step 4:

After the upholstery was done, it was time to figure out how to best affix these planks to the wall. Justin, being the genius that he is (yes, I'm sucking up here), recommended finding some sort of hooks almost like picture frame hangers for each individual plank. And after a trip to Home Depot, we found exactly what he was envisioning with the Hangman 60lb. French Cleat Picture Hanger with mounting screws.

This "French Cleat" system works out perfectly. You affix half of the system to the back of your headboard plank (or piece of artwork if you're using it for it's real purpose) and the other half of the system gets affixed to the wall. Then they hook on each other and literally do not budge. So smart!

So first step was putting the piece on the back of each piece of headboard plank. For the smaller pieces, we centered the hanger exactly within the rectangle to create equal pressure when hung. For the longer pieces, we put one hanger on each side.

Tip: Make sure that the hangers are level on the wall and piece of headboard so it all hangs straight.

Hanging Fixture on Headboard Plank

Luckily, we had our two assistants there to help us with the hanging process.

After making sure that each piece was level and each piece was tight to the next, we were left with this beautiful hanging headboard.

And here's the final product with the remainder of our room set up!

So there you have it. $115 and a few hours later, we have our beautiful panel tufted headboard as our main focal point in the mater bedroom. I couldn't have asked for it to look any better.
