Varpunen

D'autres photos ici.

Just found these beautiful pictures on Finnish stylist Susanna Vento's blog Varpunen, and thought they were worth being re-posted. I don't understand a word of Finnish, but if I got Google Translate right, this is an apartment that Susanna styled for a press event with Arla. Love the Aalto stools, the tableware from Muuto, the IKEA trolley and the overlapping rugs. More pictures here.

DIY Painted Storage Boxes & Behind the Scenes of our Office Makeover

Thanks to everyone for the kind words yesterday on our home office makeover! I'm so incredibly happy with how it turned out and can't wait for a day that I get to work from home and take advantage of this space!

Today I wanted to share a little bit of the behind the scenes of this room's makeover.

Black and White Home Office Makeover with Staples

As a reminder, this side of our Guest Bedroom started out looking like this. Boring... bland... blah...blah...blah.

Guest Bedroom Bookshelf Before

So here begins the transformation.

If you've been following Home Coming for long, you know that while we've owned our house for seven years, we had it with renters for four of those years while we lived in different places across the country. And needless to say, our renters did not take care of our house.

This bedroom wasn't too bad, but it was awful dirty (there must have been a child sleeping up against this wall) and there were cracks and holes all along the walls. So this room needed some Spackle to fill the holes and cracks, and a few coats of fresh paint.

Fixing and Painting Walls

While I was working on the room, Justin was soaking up the one nice day that we've had in the last few months painting my desk.  We bought this desk while we were renting an apartment in Denver. It's made it through three moves with us, but for this thing to make it's way out of storage into the new office, it needed a facelift.

Painting Desk White

The last project I'm sharing (today) is one of my favorite DIY projects that really brought some excitement to the room. These DIY Painted Storage Boxes cost me $0 and only took about 15 minutes. They're one of my favorite parts of the room.

DIY Painted Storage Boxes

These storage boxes are simple DIY's from two shoe boxes that I'd saved from my latest shopping spree. After spraying on a a couple coats of white paint, I painted on patterns with my black acrylic paint. Polka Dots for one box, and x's for the other. I decided the more "hand painted" it looked, the better, so I did my best to make the black patterns look imperfect.

And here's what they look like in my new office!

Tomorrow I'll break down a couple of other projects that put together this home office, so be sure to check back!

buy 1, get 1 free sale in my etsy shop

For 24 hours only, there is a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale in my Etsy shop on all 8.5" x 11" prints. Even the gold foil ones. And heck, I've even thrown in free shipping too. It's a crazy deal, for a short amount of time. Why? Although I'm shipping orders daily from my main shop, I'd love to get more visibility of my wares on Etsy, as I think it's an amazing collective of artisans. So to help get some traffic to that shop I'm throwing this (not so little) sale. You can even grab my newest print, the Popsicles, as part of the sale! Enjoy! xo Lindsay

update / sale has been extended until Friday night, so as long as the shop still says there is a sale, there is a sale. xo

new washer + dryer

We bought a new washer and dryer. Although the old pair was in ok condition I was finding it difficult to do laundry, or, maximize storage because we couldn't store anything on top of the washer and dryer with the wash being top loading. The washer was getting a little rust, and overall, we knew we'd have to upgrade one day. Top loading washer & dryers don't work for small compact areas like ours and we're really trying to maximize the space in our home better so making a switch to High Efficiency models like this made sense for a number of reasons. We've been watching for sales of laundry sets in flyers for the past number of months and saw a great deal on an LG pair at Lowes about a month ago. We decided it was a good enough price to make the leap.

I have to tell you in all honesty I didn't do a lot of research. I know. Bad Lindsay. But There are a few brands I trust, and this happened to be one of them. I liked that this set had the Steam capabilities, as I'm a big fan of steam cleaning throughout my home and, using steam to get out smells and stains from pieces.

I have to tell you that although I've only been using them a week I loooove them. They wash my clothes better, and the washer and dryer are so QUIET. They are pretty hilariously cute. The sing you a little ditty when your wash / dryer is done which makes me smile. I just like that feature. Isn't that weird? It gets me every time.

We have to work on this area a bit. I'm not going to put the curtains back because they were kind of getting in the way. We will likely add a countertop over the set, all the way to the other side and remove that metal shelf, and, add in a base cabinet. Nothing that needs to happen right away, but down the line we hope to do that.

Just little (yet unfortunately pricey) household improvements. :)

Ps., We gave our old set to some friends, so we know that they aren't going to a landfill! (Otherwise I would have donated them to Habitat for Humanity)

Home Office Makeover & Giveaway!

Hello friends. It's a big day at Home Coming because we have my Home Office reveal to share with you, plus a great giveaway with Staples. Woo hoo!

If you haven't been able to tell from my Pinterest activity, I've been obsessed with finding a way to get a home office into our little home. I work full time and like to work from home from time-to-time, but have a hard time finding a space to really concentrate and get my work done.

So when Staples reached out and asked if I'd like to work together for a Home Office Makeover, you know I jumped at the chance!

Home Office Makeover with Staples

To give you a vision of what our "Home Office" looked like before, check this out.

Home Office Before & After

Terrible, right? When we leave for work each day, our pretty pups get locked up in the "office" so they don't chew on everything in sight, so our office very quickly turned into a dog room + storage room.

Imagine Justin or I climbing over the dog fence, pulling out the folding chair and turning on our old desktop computer. Note: This happened only twice before we were over it. There was no fighting with that, so storage room + dog room it is.

But then came Staples, and the motivation to put together a space for me to work (and blog!) in.  It was just the kick in the butt that I needed!

Our first step? Find a space that will allow the flexibility to be a home office, without losing any of our "storage" space.

We decided to move the Home Office over into our Guest Bedroom. This guest bedroom is a long rectangle, so there's plenty of space at the end of the room for an Office, without taking away from any of our guests' space.

Then, with the help of Staples and a few DIY projects, we turned the room into what it is today.

Now let's give an breakdown of everything that went into this makeover.

I knew I wanted some color brought into the Black and White space, so I brought in pops of Hot Pink throughout with Poppin products.

Along with a beautiful look, I also needed the space to have a ton of storage for me to optimize the space that my little home has. For all these storage solutions, we used:

Then, for some added peices of design & organization, I included:
  • White Office Desk (this is our old one, but painted white!)
  • DIY Striped Bulletin Boards
  • Inspirational Quotes
  • Plants
  • A cozy blanket

And my favorite part of the whole room? THAT CHAIR!

Home Office Wide

In one weekend, we turned this odd (and if we're honest, ugly) corner of our Guest Bedroom and transformed it into a fully-functional office that really brightened the space up. Here's what that corner of the room looked like before:

Here's what the rest of our Guest Bedroom looks like. I'll likely work to bring through a little bit of the pink on this side of the room as well, so it feels more cohesive. What do you think?

Over the next few days, I'll be sharing all of the behind-the-scenes room transformation and DIY projects that put together this room, so be sure to come back and check it all out!

But now onto the best part of my post - a giveaway.

Staples has kindly offered a giveaway for one of you! One lucky winner will get to choose a chair, desk or filing cabinet valued at up to $100!

To inspire you, here are some of my favorites. Honestly, I had a really hard time choosing my office chair, because there were so many to choose from. I had NO idea that Staples had so much trendy office furniture.  But don't take my word for it! Note: a lot of the stylish chairs that I gravitated towards are under the "dining room chair" section.

Stockholmsgatan

La luminosité, les rangements intégrés et les portes de cuisine teintées noir avec poignées en cuir, voilà ce que j'aime en particulier dans ce joli appartement, actuellement en vente sur le site de Stadshem.

The beautiful light, the built-in storage and the black stained kitchen doors with leather handles are a few things that I particulary like about this lovely flat, currently for sale on Stadshem.
