Brick & black

Remember what I said the other day about the Scandinavian kitchens going towards darker shades, well that is valid also for the rest of the home. Take this very cool studio flat for sale on Fantastic Frank for example, where the brick wall and the black accents contrast with the white to create a warmer atmosphere.
And if you're tempted to leave the white walls behind you and go for something more cosy, check out Pella & Marie's latest project on Hitta hem if you haven't seen it yet!

bits + pieces

I feel badly for the lack of quality posts lately - getting Oscar into the swing of things at school took more of a toll on me than I had anticipated and I misjudged the amount of energy it would zap out of me. I thought I would drop him off on the first day, I'd pick him up for lunches, I'd bring him back to school for the afternoon and between it all I'd be back to my old self of having time to run the shop, clean the house, do grocery shopping, get my leisurely coffee at Starbucks, and then write a thoughtful, meaningful post about design and decor, be inspired to do artwork, oh yeah, and get in some time at the gym and sit in the steam room and meditate. Yeah. A big ol' record scratch to my soundtrack of life and everything went pretty much opposite as to how I had anticipated it would go.

Oscar was having a hard time with being dropped off, was trying to escape the "play yard" at every drop off, which made me anxious every day and, heartbroken. I cried one afternoon after a drop off. I hate seeing him upset. The class size is pretty big, so mixed in with my own trepidation about it all, I was a nervous wreck. To minimize the stress on him (and, um, maybe me?) we ended up sending him for full days - he now has lunch there.

It has made the transition surprisingly better  Obviously each kid is different - although some kids would likely benefit from coming home at lunch, my kid just needs the consistency of staying from drop off, to the end of the day. Coming home to Mom made things worse. This week has gotten better, there hasn't been any crying, and I've felt some sense of relief and, comfort in how it's all shaping up. All of this to say, that life sometimes just throws you curve balls and you have to be ready to take them. And weather the bruises. I do have to say that having a great group of Mom's for me in the neighbourhood who had been through it all, were ridiculously supportive and kept reassuring me that it would pass. Although I was bracing myself for a year of heartbreaking drop offs - they were right and, it got better.

Anyhow, here are some shots from this week. xo

Top Left: Target is rolling out new items and I'm loving their pattern play on home decor pieces. Instant commentary on stock levels here in Canada, followed in the comments. I'm rooting for Target. I love their stores, I love their stuff, but I don't disagree with a lot of the comments that stock levels are still a little unpredictable. Posted to Instagram

Top Right: Thousands, and thousands of straws. :)

Bottom Left: I picked up this guy at Target for $40.00 and forgot to bring him into the house with me after buying him. He joined me on my drive to the dentists on Wednesday. I had to remind myself not to leave him in there, as so not to scare Oscar when I picked him up from school that night! (and I was getting hilarious reactions from fellow drivers on the ride) Posted to Instagram

Bottom Right: My favourite sayings, on pencils. :)

Have a great weekend, and thanks for sticking by me as I adjust to the new routines!

a root canal, eating chocolate and #ProjectPinkRoom

I had a root canal done today. I adore my dentist, he has hands like an angel. But even still - I was freaking out and was suggesting they just knock me out with drugs to do it all. (They laughed and thought I was joking - and I assured them I was not)  I think the tension of it all - and the lead up to today, threw me off my game. I hate doctors appointments. I always feel like I'm going to go in for something and then they are going to tell me something bad is going to happen. Like my teeth are all going to fall out. Annnnnnd so - I haven't felt like journaling anything on this here blog. Apparently Aubrey knew I was stressed, it was pretty obvious. I think I was acting totally normal. Whatever. Maybe the six candy bar wrappers from last night were a giveaway. #StressEating

That being said alhough I haven't felt like writing much this week, I have felt the need to DECORATE! Our living room is stashed full of items for #ProjectPinkRoom and as you can see,...... there is a LOT of pink! Fingers crossed it comes together because seriously, this has been a whole whack load of fun, and buying things because we think they are awesome. A room revamp for the start of school for this little girl - well - makes me SO flippin' excited.

Ok. That's enough for tonight. Off to watch some trash TV and zone out. xo

Scandinavian kitchen trends

Forget the all white Scandinavian kitchen, today's trend is all about adding sober autumn colours to warm up the bright white base. The kitchen cabinets come in grey, black or blue. Dark wood, maroccan inspired tiles and leather details add warmth, and we still see a lot of marble and brass as well.
Here comes a selection of beautiful and trendy kitchens to be inspired by.

Minna's project and the Safari daybed

Some time ago, Minna from Time of the Aquarius ordered a Safari daybed from my shop to be used in an interior project she was working on. The result is this bright and welcoming apartment filled with beautiful furniture in light wood, soft hues of grey and terracotta and a few black accents. I'm happy to see how well our daybed (2nd photo) fits in too! If you want to know the source of the other products used by Minna, have a look on her blog here.

Black/white/wood/grey and a green plant

I ran into this beautiful home on Hemnet tonight and I'm pretty sure it belongs to Swedish ceramist Kajsa Cramer (whose stunning ceramics you can also find in my shop). I really like the graphic black & white look, softened by different kinds of wood, shades of grey and refreshing green plants. The house is for sale here.

Maison&Objet - Words by Elizabeth Leriche

The trend theme for this latest Maison&Objet was "Sharing", a dynamic of creative sharing in the digital age. Among the three exhibitions dedicated to this theme I prefered "Words" by Elizabeth Leriche: a beautiful and poetic setting where words and letters are resisting the supremacy of digital communication.

The entrance was made from piles of books.
L'entrée était faite de livres empilés.

These "sheets" are actually made of fine porcelain.

Did you know that the Japanese language has dozens of words to describe rain? Nendo made this poetic installation where each bottle contains a different translation of the word rain.
