DIY Faux Cowhide Rug

She's taking on another big trend that I'm obsessed with, the cowskin rug. Everyone give a big welcome back to <a href="http://amykrist.org/" style="color: #f6644d; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Amy Krist</a>!  </i><br /><br />So what is an animal lover to do when she is also itching for a cowhide rug to grace her floor? She makes one out of vinyl! Love that.<br /><br />I used an <a href="http://www.warehousefabricsinc.com/NEWMOO.html" target="_blank" title="ostrich vinyl">ostrich print vinyl</a> that I already had on hand from my <a href="http://amykrist.org/2014/02/scandinavian-barstools/" target="_blank" title="Scandinavian Barstools">bar stool</a> project [that is yet to be finished by the way]. Being the collector of animal shaped rugs, I used my other faux cowhide rug as a guide. However <a href="http://www.zgallerie.com/p-11116-ayi-faux-cowhide-rug-charcoal.aspx?gclid=Cj0KEQjw3IieBRDl1oG0gr_PweoBEiQAwGHVw0F-9bzcdPloaY7S73alG9X1jX_M2iJ4ByApHr_RLMMaAnBM8P8HAQ" target="_blank" title="cowhide rug ">this </a>could also be used a guide for those of you non-collectors.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/make-your-own-faux-cowhide-rug-from-vinyl.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="make your own faux cowhide rug from vinyl" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4303" height="827" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/make-your-own-faux-cowhide-rug-from-vinyl.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />I didn't have a ton of vinyl leftover so my cowhide rug was a smaller version than a standard size. Once the shape resembled my other rug, I cut it out using my sharp scissors. It still has a few folds and wrinkles from when it was shipped, but they will relax over time. I'm sure albino cows exist somewhere, right? If you prefer an authentic spotted cowhide, I would probably use black and brown Sharpie markers and allow it to dry a good 3 days before walking on it.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Guest Post: No-Sew Outdoor Pillow

We are officially 4 days into summer vacation with the kiddos and I'm already losing my mind. The image of Goldie Hawn in the classic movie "Overboard" comes to mind. Honestly, I don't know what I would do with myself if I didn't have my DIY hobby.<br /><br />Anyhoo, my latest and greatest creation was born one sleepless evening. Fabric Fusion is awesome and permanent and not too messy.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">My pillow is 16" square, my fabric was cut at 17". I suggest resting a few books on top of the edges to let it dry flat. Guest Post: Instagram Picture Holder

<i>It's like Amy is talking right to me with this post. I'm always looking for simple DIY projects that make a big impact and this is the King. Everyone give a big welcome back to <a href="http://amykrist.org/" target="_blank">Amy Krist</a>!  </i><br /><br />By the time my daughter turned one, I had amassed over 3,000 pictures of her! No joke. She was my first-born and the second she graced our lives I turned into her little paparazzi. Needless to say, she runs when she sees me head for my camera now. I've tamed it down considerably, but these thousands of pictures are just sitting on my external hard drive doing nothing. So I created these cute and easy picture holders so I could showcase some of my favorites.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/instagram-picture-holders-made-from-scrap-wood.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="instagram picture holders made from scrap wood" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3823" height="691" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/instagram-picture-holders-made-from-scrap-wood.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />This DIY couldn't be easier. All you need are some scrap pieces of wood [I used a piece of wood that was 1.5" thick and 3.5" wide], a chop saw, sandpaper and a few pictures.<br /><br />To start I cut my blocks of wood down to 3.5" long x 3.5" wide. I found this was a good size to hold a picture 400 px x 400 px.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/create-an-easy-instagram-picture-holder.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="instagram picture holder" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3822" height="853" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/instagram-picture-holder.jpg" width="640" /><img alt="create an easy instagram picture holder" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3815" height="933" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/create-an-easy-instagram-picture-holder.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Next I angled my chop saw at 40 degrees.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/easy-instagram-picture-holder-from-scrap-wood.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy instagram picture holder from scrap wood" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3817" height="910" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/easy-instagram-picture-holder-from-scrap-wood.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />To prevent my block from shooting across the garage [found this out the hard way a couple weeks ago] I used a wood board and applied a bit of pressure. I made sure my wood board was thinner than my wood block so I didn't cut through it while making my cuts.<br /><br />Now simply cut a line in your wood block apx 1 inch deep.<br /><br />Once all cuts were made I gave each block a quick sanding with a fine grit sandpaper.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/picture-holder-made-from-scrap-wood.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="picture holder made from scrap wood" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3824" height="853" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/picture-holder-made-from-scrap-wood.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Be sure to sand inside the cut you just made as it can be a bit sharp. I like Minwax's poly in satin finish. The picture holder on the left has one coat of poly. It really brings out the grain in the wood.<br /><br />You're done!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/easy-picture-holders-made-from-scrap-wood.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy picture holders made from scrap wood" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3827" height="691" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/easy-picture-holders-made-from-scrap-wood.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />I created these "Polaroid pictures" from card stock, color print outs of my pictures and a glue stick. Simply cut a piece of card stock down to a proportionate size to your picture holder [mine are 3.5" wide x 4.5" long]. Next print out any picture you have, or make a copy of one laying around your house. I printed these pictures at 400 px x 400 px [3" x 3"]. Rub your glue stick on the back of your picture and glue to the card stock. To get the "Polaroid" look leave a large margin at the bottom. Guest Post: Kids Bookends from Plastic Toys

Awesome! </i><br /><br />After returning from our two week <a href="http://amykrist.org/2014/03/tour-of-my-in-laws-house-in-germany/" target="_blank" title="tour of my in-laws’ house in Germany">vacation to Germany</a> this week I was itching to get back to DIY'ing. My head is spinning with fresh ideas but my rear is dragging from the jet-lag so I am diving back into the creative world one baby step at a time. I conjured up this project somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean last week. It is ridiculously easy and cheap for anyone who wants to fill a spare 20 minutes. It's functional, cute, colorful and best of all...inexpensive!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/colorful-bookend-using-old-plastic-toys+bricks.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="colorful bookend using old plastic toys+bricks" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3557" height="480" src="http://amykrist.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/colorful-bookend-using-old-plastic-toys+bricks.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />I don't know about your house, but ours is full of plastic toys. For some odd reason I found two identical dinosaurs stuffed at the bottom of my son's closet so I grabbed them before he noticed. You can use any chunky toys for this project. I chose to paint each bookend with two coats so the color seeped into all the grooves.<br /><br />You can stop at this point, but I wanted to add a fun detail to these bookends so I wound some of my nylon Masons twine in neon green around the base. This project cost apx $7.00. I purchased the bricks at Home Depot for $0.50 each and had the remaining supplies already on-hand. The rest of the supplies cost a few dollars each.<br /><br />Go grab a few of those neglected plastic toys and turn them into something fun and practical!
