My heart stopped and I got up close and fell in love. They were priced as a pair at $210.00 which the new owner of the shop assured me was a fair price and, worth that much as scrap metal. (my heart broke hearing that) Nothing pains me more when a shop in cottage country ups their prices to be city pricing or maybe knows the "retail" value of something.  I have a pretty good handle on pricing on furniture, but I was a little out of my comfort zone on whether this was priced fairly for being in cottage country. This was one of the scenarios where it wouldn't have likely gone in my home, but I saw it going into a room for someone like <a href="http://christinedovey.com/" target="_blank">Christine</a> in one of her totally gorgeous rooms. Although some things are not to my taste (I'm much more of an all white person) sometimes you see something and know exactly who it was for. But at that price I couldn't afford to buy it and bring them home.<br /><br />When I was at the <a href="http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.ca/2014/05/well-thats-something-i-never-expected.html" target="_blank">Telus series,</a> part of my talk was about my "luck" in finding items at great prices in thrift stores. Commonly I hear that I have luck and that I must have different spots close to me that are good. I won't argue that the locations close to me are good - but the luck for me is always going into a thrift store - even an antique store like above - is that<i> I'm not looking for anything in particular.</i> Going in with that 10% of if I see it, and I can't put it in my home, I know I can flip it to someone else. That 10% buffer gives me a creative freedom to look around. I think that is my trick - I look around and if the price is good on something I like, I grab it. Sometimes though, like the flamingos I walk away. I still think about them and how beautiful they are.<br /><br />I also brought up at the Telus Inspiration series how much I do seriously adore <a href="http://prf.hn/click/camref:11l3pT/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.etsy.com%2Fpages%2Flittlehouseblog" target="_blank">Etsy</a> - because if I leave something behind at a thrift store, or, am looking for a particular vintage piece that I can't find in my area - I quickly hop on Etsy and do a search. I know I talk<i> a lot</i> about Etsy - I have for years -  it's not only a hot bed for artists but it's also booming as a vintage sellers market. A few weeks after leaving these flamingos behind<a href="https://www.etsy.com/pages/littlehouseblog/gold?ref=ctx-bar" target="_blank"> I found these two on Etsy.</a> Although smaller than the two I found in person, these were each priced <i>as a pair </i>at under $70.00. I sometimes just show things I find while thrifting but don't always show the things I walk away from, and why.  Sometimes antique shopping in the city in thrift stores - or, even in small town Ontario doesn't mean you always get best pricing.<br /><br />(So whip out that phone in the car, and do a Google search of Ebay or Etsy to find out!) ;)<br /><i><br /></i><i>Ps., I'm obsessed with the new show on <a href="http://www.hgtv.ca/buyitfixitsellit/" target="_blank">HGTV "Buy it, Fix it, Sell it" </a>and have it PVR'd. (They go to auctions and buy crazy things, fix it up and sell it) <a href="http://tiffanypratt.com/" target="_blank">Tiffany Pratt</a> is, by the way, the best part of the show - and her enthusiasm and potty mouth has me captivated.</i>

With a few hours to spare I googled "Antique stores" and found<a href="http://www.southworksantiques.com/" target="_blank"> Southworks Antiques.</a>  It was pretty fun place visit, but even before walking through the doors, my thrifting self knew that I wasn't going to be going here for deals. Instead, this is a spot where people have already "picked" items and are displaying them in booths for you to shop. The pro to visiting a place like this, is that if you're looking for some "ah-ha's" for your home - unique things to decorate with, you <i>will </i>find something. I almost guarantee it. The downside is, it's not the same as the pricing in Cottage country or, thrift shops in Toronto. So if you're going for a deal, it's not <i>really</i> you're spot. But if you're going with looking for really cool stuff to add some "ah-ha's" to your home, then this is your place. Walking around I got a ton of ideas for how to add my own hits of fun to our home. Obviously you know my love of Etsy - it allows shop keepers like those at Southworks to show their wares. So I found some vintage milk bottles like those at Southworks available online. As you can see the pricing at Southworks wasn't far off what people are selling certain things for online. What is the right terminology?  Anyhow - for the sake of this blog post we'll go with the term "<i>antiques</i>". ;) Going back a year<a href="http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.ca/2012/08/the-4-best-antique-spots-in-cottage.html" target="_blank"> I did a pretty extensive roundup of my favourite antique spots to go hunting in the Kawarthas</a>. <b>Red Rock Antiques</b> (pictured above) is still a huge barn filled with a TON of stuff but some pieces were now listed at Toronto retail prices which takes a little fun out of the hunt. I'm sure it leaves room for negotiation. Cottage Country Finds: Canadian Crown Jars

It seemed like pure Canadiana to me and while antiquing in cottage country last week, I spotted in two different shops collections of old Canadian Crown Jars. Although I would still love one from <a href="http://www.heydaydesign.ca/" target="_blank">Heyday Design</a>, the price of the real glass ones were too good to pass up. <br /><br />The weight to them is significant, and on the blue one, you can see that the glass is far from perfectly blown. Indents here and there make it feel like you're holding a piece of history. Unlike the new canning jars that you buy today these have significant weight and beautiful imperfections. I'll stop my collection here as I don't want to take away from the pleasure I have looking at these two, reminding me of our summer trip. <br /><br />The blue jar I almost passed up, until the shop keeper pointed out that it had on the back T. Eaton Co. And 190 Yonge Street - the location of Eaton's as of 1883 [<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eaton's" target="_blank">Source</a>]. Although neither jar are likely worth much, they are finding spots in the (soon to be revealed) kitchen. :) <br /><br />Ps., I really wanted to find an original <a href="http://heydaydesign.bigcartel.com/product/large-beaver-jar" target="_blank">beaver jar</a> but I was told they are really hard to come by - and therefore, are expensive.

The recipe for the perfect shop is is location (like a barn or run down warehouse), clutteredness (there must be a thrill of finding things"), assortment of items (because each visit is different) and also - the friendliness of the owners. That for me, makes a <em>great</em> shop. Going into a well staged store just isn't the same. Growing up my parents would drive through Argyle to get to the cottage. (<a href="http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.ca/2010/07/little-antique-shop.html" target="_blank">See my last post on them here</a>) In an old barn, it is stuffed with a treasure trove of fun things - and at <em>great</em> prices. I'd recommend popping in if you're looking for furniture - I always spot wood pieces I wish I could take home to refinish or paint. I think it's only open weekends, but if you can stop in I really recommend it. If you want to recreate our "road trip" be sure to stop in at the baker/shop across the road and pick up a butter tart. We always get one to share amongst the passengers in the car. Ps. Have to mention that the owner is really, really nice. I picked up an old Crown Jar that has The T. Eaton Co. stamped on the back (more on that later). The owner was so fun to talk to, as he told me stories about the history of the jars. I spotted a ton of furniture that I wanted but our small little car couldn't carry it - and us home. I'd go here if you'd like to find some furniture to paint. <br /><br /><strong><u>3. Family. The sign says <a href="http://www.ylm.ca/ylm/ylm_comp_detail.aspx?comp_id=306991&name=Gull+River+Company&f=cokltourism" target="_blank">Gull River Co. 3 Antiques</a> (The three possibly a nod to the fact that they previously had three shops) It has expanded since last summer, taking over an additional warehouse space. I picked up a ton of stuff from them. In love with Teak furniture? You MUST go here. They have an additional barn full of the most beautiful teak sets. I fell in love with a pin ball machine - and I kid you not when I say it almost came home with us. I picked up an old crown jar from 1940 that I adore. The prices aren't as inexpensive as the previous three shops that I listed, but they are most definitely fair and better than you would find in the city.  A wild assortment of furniture, accessories, and books.
