This room was the one that was giving me trouble in terms of coming up with a "look" - but in the end, is is the room I'm most in love with. I LOVE white. We spend all of our money on the furniture, and then stare at it wondering how on earth we're to style it. Although I love white, I think you need to bring in some colour / pattern in somewhere, in order to bring in style. Especially if your headboard is as white as your bedding. <br /><br />The most common thing I think is to head to a store and <a href="http://www.sears.ca/product/relaxx-wild-heart-bed-in-a-bag/696-000959866-24VP6_4_099200" target="_blank">buy a matching duvet set with matching pillows and call it a day</a>. I'm personally a proponent of white bedding - for me, it's the most luxurious look and reminds me of a hotel. It also means you can switch up your look often, should you like to.  I don't love 99% of patterned bedding. I feel as though it's too much look for one room. (<a href="http://www.thebay.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/thebay/home/bed/mirabeau-paisley-bedding-collection" target="_blank">Like this. How many pillows does this bed need!?</a>) But we needed some colour and pattern. And we had to do it in a relatively affordable way. From there it was pretty easy for me to get on a roll because the colours are really my colour pallet - I love cool tones, blues, greens, purples - everything goes together.<br /><br />Some changes:<br /><br /><b>Lighting</b>:<br />I switched out the lights that they had on their side tables for bigger ones that would be more in scale with the big headboard and also allow for them to read in bed.  Bigger lamps, minimizes the feeling that the bed is <i>too big</i>. I their existing lights to their dresser, and flanked each side - the height of the lights make the big mirror of the Whitley dresser set feel more in scale with the room. It also provides some beautiful light in the evening, should you not want the overhead light on.<br /><br /><b>Pillows</b>:<br />I brought in three large Euro sized pillows from <a href="http://www.tonicliving.com/" target="_blank">Tonic Living,</a> that was made in a dark blue linen. The pillow inserts are faux feather and feel like feather but aren't, and therefore, not as expensive. Tonic made me a bolster cover in this fabric for an existing bolster form that I had (well, I stole from my Mom's house) The custom pillows are what makes this room go from white, to AMAZEBALLS. (links to everything below)<br /><br /><b>Artwork</b>:<br />I kept it pretty simple, going with the feeling that a bedroom should be relaxing and zen. On one side of the bed is an abstract print that I did, and on the other side, two smaller original pieces from Etsy hang. I lined them to no higher than the headboard.<br /><br /><b>Accents</b>:<br />I think every room needs plants - and lucky for them they have gorgeous light that makes their place a suitable home for a fiddle leaf fig tree. (i know, the blogger plant of the year) Also, I found a little piece of blue pottery while out in cottage country - I think it was $2, and I planted a little succulent in it. The blue of the pottery, plays into the blues throughout the rooms. <a href="http://www.pehrdesigns.com/products-type/hampers-and-bins/" target="_blank">A yellow Pehr hamper</a> ties in the yellow from the bolster and has a similar pattern. The replication of colour and pattern, I think is what makes this work. There is also a hint of yellow in the throw, so we have the yellow in a few different places.<br /><br />The investment in pillows isn't inexpensive, perhaps the tally for the three on the back, the fabric, the pillow inserts (excluing the bolster) is around $350 (more or less). But it's exactly what was needed to make this bed go from a showroom piece, to something warm and cozy and "designer". Really, that's a small, small price for really transforming a room!<br /><br />And there you go! I felt as though the room could easily be in Paris. It seems fitting then, that Lindsay and Peter chose the <a href="http://www.leons.ca/living-room-furniture/upholstery/sofas/tristan-sofa/1605893.aspx#.VCBTVPldV8F" target="_blank">Tristan couch from Leon's </a>- the linen, the curves and tufting reminds me of something that you may see in a Parisian home.<a href="http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.ca/2014/08/decorating-with-leons-couch-sponsored.html" target="_blank"> Going with my original inspiration,</a> this is what we ended up pulling together...<br /><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0091/7252/files/Untitled-1_e67a1a4d-c28b-4647-8c52-982cb47f34e7.jpg?4362" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0091/7252/files/Untitled-1_e67a1a4d-c28b-4647-8c52-982cb47f34e7.jpg?4362" /></a></div><br /><br /><br /><br />The piece that they picked for their living room was the <a href="http://www.leons.ca/living-room-furniture/upholstery/sofas/tristan-sofa/1605893.aspx#.VCBQrvldV8E" target="_blank">Leon's Tristan sofa.</a> Everything else is purchased on a budget or, handed down to the couple. The look is comfortable for a young couple - but the couch will transition with them as they change their style, or, living quarters.  One thing I've realized over the years of decorating my own home, is that <i>a small room doesn't mean you need a small couch.</i> One may have worried that such a grand couch would look too big in this room, but instead, it helps fill the room up - and makes everything feel to scale.<br /><br />Here are some key things that I think pull this look together<br /><br /><b>Couch Changes</b><br />Couches sometimes come with matching throw pillows. Matchy-matchy isn't my style, so consider recovering the pillows they provide you with (with your couch purchase) or, do what I did and invest in bigger pillows. And, splurge on feather inserts, to give your guests extra comfort when they sit down.<br /><br />We added two larger (24 inch feather) pillows to the couch, with a wool plaid I sourced from <a href="https://secure.designerfabrics.ca/shop/scripts/prodlist.asp?idCategory=30" target="_blank">Designer Fabrics.</a> To keep costs down, I did one side of the pillow in  the woold plaid, and the opposite side in a black velvet. The wool I chose for the front was not what I'd call "budget" but by pairing it with a less expensive fabric it brought down the cost. I also went with 24" pillows, which adds to the comfort of the whole couch. I feel as though 16" pillows / 18" pillows for a couch of this grandeur are too small, so it's fun to invest in custom pillows in a fabric that you love. Just because a couch comes with pillows doesn't mean you have to use them!<br /><br /><b>Art On The Walls</b><br />I think gallery walls are amazing - it's a great way to bring in a lot of colour or art to a room to give it personality (<a href="http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.ca/2014/05/living-room-take-3.html" target="_blank">see our living room as an example</a>). There are a lot of resources out there as to how to do a good gallery wall - we just eye balled it - making sure that the pieces stayed within the width of the couch. We mixed in DIY Art (I made the "Darling, let's be adventurers" using stock photography found online) with their own vintage artwork, and a framed print of a <a href="http://www.lunarland.com/" target="_blank">deed to the moon</a>, a gift from Lindsay to Peter a few years back.<br /><br /><b>Extra Furniture</b><br />Things like the coffee table were handed down to the couple from my Mom, and that stunner of a leather chair used to be my Grandfather's chair (I almost stole it from their apartment) The acclectic mix of pieces gives this room personality and a lived in vibe that is comfortable, which is exactly what Linds and Pete wanted! If you don't have a family member getting rid of furniture, go to second hand shops and keep your eye open for great pieces.<br /><br />And there you go! But before I do - I have a few more steps I want to elaborate on. First I showed <a href="http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.ca/2014/08/decorating-with-leons-couch-sponsored.html" target="_blank">what they picked for the Living Room</a> but I have yet to show you what they picked for the <i>bedroom</i>. Truthfully, I was having the hardest time coming up with a "look". Which I thought was probably relateable to many people so I thought I'd share my process on this room, because in the end, the after is ridiculously fun and the process is hopefully inspiring for someone else. So for the bedroom, I'm going to do things differently and show you the actually <i>process </i>for the room, and hold back on the reveal until later.<br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Linds and Peter picked the <a href="http://www.leons.ca/bedroom-furniture/bedroom/package-specials/whitley-5-pc-king-bedroom-set/1601127.aspx#.VA8O-PmwLYg" target="_blank">Whitley Collection</a> over the Summer. A <i>beautiful </i>white collection. You know me and white. It's a match made in heaven, so I was pretty supportive of this choice. They picked a King size bed, and matching dresser, for their room. We opted not to get the side tables - I think when looking at furniture collections, it's best to bring in some pieces <i>not from sets</i>, to make the room feel different and, more "designed". But in all honestly, the Whitley collection is pretty classic so had they opted for the side tables, it would have looked equally as nice. One concern I had was that the dresser in the Whitley collection has a curve to it, which I didn't know if it would work or not, but once in the space, I can tell you - I was proved wrong and it is amazing for a smaller room, as the curve gives you a big dresser but doesn't take up too much space. It reminds me of a Barbara Barry piece. It really is beautiful.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>So our timing was rather tight as I needed to work around care for Oscar, running my shop, my art collection expansion, and driving out to Peterborough, about 2 hours away, and coordinating paints, accessories etc. So at the end of August, Linds and Pete took possession of their place and within 24 hours we were on the road prior to their official "move" to do some painting. Decorating a room when you're not living in it yourself, or not in the same city is <i>ridiculously hard</i> and light changes everything. So picking a colour for this room was a wee bit of a stress for me. From the pictures that Lindsay and Peter showed me, I felt that the existing colour (shown in the top photo) was too dark. To ease my mind about decorating in a different city, I chose a wall colour I was comfortable with - Benjamin Moores Classic Gray for the walls, and Chantilly Lace for the trim. (Ps., they have <i>free </i>delivery on local delivery orders over $498)  It was a bit crazy - but the delivery team do all the heavy lifting and put it together. They got a King size bed - and because of the narrow staircase that they have to get into their place - they chose a split box spring which helps! Ps., That <a href="http://www.sealycanada.com/en/posturepedic-proback-reflex.html" target="_blank">mattress </a>is RIDICULOUSLY comfy. I kind of want to switch my mattress now. (They picked the <a href="http://www.sealycanada.com/en/posturepedic-proback-reflex.html" target="_blank">Posturepedic Proback Reflex</a> from Leon's)<br /><br />Now it was time for me to pull together a look for their bedroom. I always feel like you need a vision for a room in order to "decorate" it. I don't like using bedding as a decorating focus - It's too much for me, and not my style - I much prefer white sheets and white coverlets, so I was looking to focus in on pillows and accents to make this room comfortable and stylish, but not overly so that they would feel that they were living in a showroom. I decided that a plaid wool throw that I love - that has blues, greens and purples - and a hint of yellow - would be my jumping off point. Anyhow, I brought the throw into <a href="http://www.tonicliving.com/" target="_blank">Tonic Living</a> and Janine and I sorted through the racks and found some pretty gorgeous pieces. Tonic whipped up some stunning custom pillows and last Monday I drove them up to Peterborough.<br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="385" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/p_MaD8avh3o?rel=0" width="685"></iframe><br /><br />I hope this shows the process of the room! The couch that they fell in love with is called the <a href="http://www.leons.ca/living-room-furniture/upholstery/sofas/tristan-sofa/1605893.aspx#.U_vfnPldV8E" target="_blank">Tristan</a>. Does it look familiar? If you recall from <a href="http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.ca/2014/08/apartment-makeover-with-leons-myleons.html" target="_blank">my first post</a>, Peter <i>really loved </i>the <a href="http://www.leons.ca/living-room-furniture/leather/sofas/shea-sofa/1610239.aspx#.U_vZJvldV8E">Shea sofa</a> - which looks idential to this one, but it was leather. If you've ever bought a couch, Leather is something you either dig, or don't - and Lindsay really wasn't into it - so this couch, an identical style but in a soft linen coloured fabric was an easy compromise. They loved the couch because of the style, but also, because this one was really, really comfy. Selfishly, <i>I was excited </i>about this choice because it really lent itself well to a a reveal. I mean, it's a GORGEOUS sofa<a href="http://www.pinterest.com/littlehouseblog/references-tufted-couch/" target="_blank">. I've added in some fabric variations to the leather in this Pinterest board, </a>to show you some varying styles that you can go, when you choose a sofa like this. But how are we going to style it? While I was at the cottage for our vacation, I e-mailed my brother and asked him to just send me some words for how he'd describe how he wanted his place to feel. He wrote back "<b><i>Rustic and comfortable</i></b>". Plaid pillows, some finds that I've sourced from live auctions that I went to, etsy and other retailers. I wanted to show you both looks because a couch like the<a href="http://www.leons.ca/living-room-furniture/upholstery/sofas/tristan-sofa/1605893.aspx#.U_veVPldV8E" target="_blank"> Tristan sofa</a> can really switch from one look to another, with a change of things like art, and throw pillows.<br /><br />I'm not a decorator, I just obsess over this kind of stuff and have a great deal of fun doing it. Personally, I think <i>anyone </i>can have a stylish home - given the right inspiration, tricks of where to shop and so on. Buying a gorgeous (well priced) couch from Leon's is a great starting point, especially for Peter and Linds who don't have anything yet. With that major item, we can source pillows from Etsy. Invest in a cool lamp from West Elm, add in cool rugs, and style that couch to really reflect someones individual style. Fingers crossed I can pull off the look in real life and not just here on the blog. Yikes! Selfishly, I've <i>loved </i>having them around - we have Sunday night dinners, go to the cottage together, have movie nights - Oscar loves his Uncle Pete and they have had tons of "boys" days together. It's such a special bond, and I'm ridiculously grateful for that. I also feel like Lindsay has been in our family forever, I adore her like as if she was born my sister.<br /><br />A few months ago, Lindsay got accepted into nursing school (yay!) and in a week they are packing up and moving into their own place. <a href="http://www.city.peterborough.on.ca/site3.aspx" target="_blank">In another city.</a> (booooo!) Although I'm heartbroken to not have them right here - I'm so excited for their new adventure as a married couple.<br /><br />I noticed that Linds and Pete were on such a small budget for the move, and as such, they had little funds left over for decorating. I wanted to help them a nice place that would start them off feeling like "adults" so started thinking - <b>where could I shop that was economical, but also had stylish furniture</b>. Typically economical and stylish aren't words that you see together a lot when it comes to furniture. <i>And </i>I wanted to find a place that didn't scream "dorm" room like some other big box stores do. Right off the bat - <a href="http://www.leons.ca/" target="_blank">Leon's </a>came to mind.<br /><br />My thought process was this - I knew that <a href="http://www.leons.ca/" target="_blank">Leon's </a>pricing was very reasonable and in terms of style, their items appeal to a large market of people - you have formal, casual,country - a look for everyone. I knew if you took a few key pieces and added personal touches - what you may think may not be very stylish could really be when paired with the <b>right accents.</b> Having browsed <a href="http://www.leons.ca/" target="_blank">their website,</a> after some looking there were some really great <i>classic </i>pieces. I felt like it was such a great collaboration, so I reached out to <a href="http://www.leons.ca/" target="_blank">Leon's</a> and told them about Peter and Lindsay moving, my ideas of what I could do with their collections and.... they loved the idea of collaborating! I love when companies are game to have some fun, and think outside the box.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.leons.ca/" target="_blank">Leon's </a>invited Peter and Lindsay to pick some major key pieces for their new place  - with my role to step in at the end to style and reveal. HOW FUN is that? Peter and Linds get awesome furniture, I get to play decorator for two of my favourite people.<br /><br />And so the decorating adventure begins. This isn't about decorating 100% with a store. Leon's knows you won't buy <i>all </i>your decorating accessories from them - but what I will show you is exactly what I had envisioned when I reached out to Leon's. How you can pick <b>single key pieces from their store</b>, and work magic with mixing and matching pieces. I had done a preliminary browse <a href="http://www.leons.ca/" target="_blank">on their website</a> which has all of the pieces listed, along with measurements. The initial browse on the website was a good introduction and, gave us an idea of what we wanted to focus on. But I'm close to the<a href="http://www.leons.ca/shared/store/storelocations.aspx" target="_blank"> Leon's at The Roundhouse</a>, so that's the destination we picked as our "go to" location.<br /><br />The three of us headed to the <a href="http://www.leons.ca/shared/store/storelocations.aspx" target="_blank">Roundhouse location</a> in downtown Toronto. (It's GORGEOUS) I tagged along to be a voice of reason (and to snap photos) but tried to stay in the background as much as possible, as it was their first foray into furniture buying. And from experience I knew that an excursion like this could be stressful. (Especially when you have your sister tagging along). A shopping trip like this, you are trying to figure out your own style, tastes and at the same time - dealing with your partner on what they want. I remember Aubrey and I having a meltdown over <i>china patterns </i>for our gift registry. Deciding on what your style is as a couple is <i>ridiculously </i>hard. So as I told them, the first visit wasn't to buy anything or, make decisions. It was like dating. You needed to go meet the pieces, test them out. Not at all.<br /><br />I thought that they were for sure going to pick the bed above, but after a second visit, selected a different one. The bed shopping was pretty easy for them, and they picked a mattress that they adored. The bed wasn't really the "BIG" decision - it turned out to be the couch. They actually stayed in this couch for awhile. It was being very much considered as a couch. Rec room - yes. Main living room? Not so much. Both Lindsay and Peter had different ideas of what they liked. When you first walk in, <i>everything </i>is a possibility. That blue couch? Yup. It could work. That tufted leather one? Ohhh. Gorgeous. Every couch you walk by could be "the" couch. When you let your eyes adjust to the large selection of what you can pick from, you start to see pieces that really are gorgeous, and, could be in an issue of Domino magazine, if it were paired with the right fiddle leaf fig tree and rifle paper co. wallpaper. There are gems in the store. If you haven't been to the Leon's Roundhouse downtown Toronto I highly recommend you visit. While you're down there, go visit the Train Museum<a href="http://instagram.com/p/rpiSaNQsmq/?modal=true" target="_blank"> like we did</a>. It's a vibrant, historic area of the city. The Leon's area is brightly lit, wide open, and styled beautifully into little vignettes that makes it easy to imagine a piece (or two) in your own home. I get overwhelmed in tightly packed spaces and this was anything but.<br /><br />I'll reveal what they picked later on this week, but the couch above was being considered as a major contender. (Peter loved it!) They <i>didn't </i>pick it - but I was digging it.
