After seeing some beautiful inspiration on painted coasters and geometric designed coasters, I decided I needed to make some myself.

DIY Painted Coasters

A few months ago when we were scoping our flooring for our master suite renovation, I had taken three floor samples from Home Depot that I knew would work perfect for coasters.

Coasters Before

I sketched up a couple of fun geometric prints, taped them off, and started painting. I had white and pink spray paint, then decided to do the other colors (yellow, mint & navy) with my regular paint & a paintbrush.

And right about now is when the project took a turn for the worse. The navy paint that I used was a free sample of Valspar paint that I had gotten at Lowe's. If you receive an HGTV or DIY magazine, you've probably seen the "free sample" coupons that are in the magazine.

I'm more of a Behr paint girl and will definitely stay that way after this project. The Valspar paint was really thin and watery.  The watery-thin paint + the ridges of the flooring samples meant that the navy paint spread everywhere. It seeped under the blue painters tape, over the blue painters tape (and all over my counter). It was a mess.

It was such a mess that I didn't even think to take a photo. So you'll have to take my word for it. I salvaged one of the coasters that was ruined by the navy paint, but it's definately not as pretty as I would have hoped. I even had to throw one of the three away, because there was no salvaging it. Sad days.

Coasters After

But free + a little bit of a headache is way better than having boring coasters! Right?

Have you ever worked on a project that turned out poorly?
