There are thousands of "How to Tile" instructions from fellow DIY bloggers to the pros, so I'm not going to repeat that all here. But if you want to see how to tile first-hand, I recommend going to The Tile Shop for their free tiling class like we did. It helped answer a few questions we had and boost our confidence in being able to DIY.
And we did it!
As you can see, we still don't have a toilet, tub or even glass shower walls yet, but we're getting there. And we're super happy with how it's turning out.
Here's how we tiled our bathroom:
We put Durrarock (Cement Board) down wherever there would be tile.
Soon after starting, we realized that we didn't order enough shower floor tile. So, we started with the bathroom floor. No problem though, because we had plenty to keep us busy.
We laid the thinset & started tiling the bathroom floor. Check out that beautiful Saturday morning hair!
After a couple days, our extra box of shower floor tile arrived so Justin was able to lay them. This was tricky because of the shower drain, but lucky for me Justin is a big-time, super-duper, over the top perfectionist. So it turned out, well...perfect!
Then it was on to the tricky part. The shower walls. Perfectionist Justin's worst fear was that the tile wouldn't be level because our house is so old the walls aren't square. So, smarty pants that he is, he concocted a little trick to make sure the tile started level.
As you can see in the below photo, he took some scrap plywood and created a level "base" to start tiling up from. This made it certain that the first row of tile set would be level, helping the case with all tile laid above it. Then, after we were done with the shower walls up to the ceiling, he removed the plywood "base" and cut the pieces for below so they fit our somewhat unlevel floor.
It worked swimmingly.
We used the same white marble tile to tile the top of our tub surround.
And then grouted the whole room in the same weekend. Justin was in charge of the grouting and I was in charge of wiping it off & cleaning the tile. It was a painstaking process because of the film that covers the marble as you're cleaning the extra grout off. But after a few hours (yes, hours) the grout was perfect and the tile was clean of film.
I let Justin grout the shower floor all by his lonesome, since this is a pretty small space.
And we grouted the floor too, but I didn't get any photos of that process.
All-in, the tile + grout + cleaning process probably took us about 40 hours because of Mr. Perfectionist. But I wouldn't ask for it any other way. It looks like a professional did it.
Pretty right?
The only thing we have left is to caulk all of the corners and get our glass shower walls installed!
