How to hang Sheetrock

Justin & I are getting down and dirty with the details from our Master Suite remodel. First on the docket? I mean, look at what you have to look forward to.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/11085511804/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="What a mess by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="What a mess" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5487/11085511804_f99a590776_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />This hanging Sheetrock how-to is a <i>quick</i> tutorial, but a daunting one to most DIY'ers. I knew I was a little afraid of helping when we first started our remodel but with Carpenter Justin showing me the ropes, I quickly caught on and helped out as much as I could (<i>which let's be honest, wasn't much</i>). Ha!<br /><br />With this post, we're going to give you the general overview of how to hang Sheetrock, with a few tips and tricks to make it easier. We didn't get too many photos of the process (since our hands were busy) so if you want an excellent and in-depth tutorial, we'd recommend <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/c/how_to_install_drywall_professional_steps_HT_PG_BM" target="_blank">this</a> or <a href="http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-hang-drywall-and-mud/index.html" target="_blank">this</a>. <br /><br /><b>How to Hang Sheetrock</b><br /><br />Since we put in all new insulation in our attic and walls, we had the task of hanging Ceiling Sheetrock (5/8" thickness) as well as Wall Sheetrock (1/2" thickness).  We purchased all of our Sheetrock from Home Depot in 4x8' sheets.<br /><br />Here's what our room looked like before we started putting the poly on or the Sheetrock up.<br /><br />Before you start putting up Sheetrock, all wall insulation should be in and poly should be up and securely fastened. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/11820580553/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Pre Sheetrock by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="Pre Sheetrock" height="427" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5478/11820580553_90f6cff5f5_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Hanging wall and ceiling Sheetrock are basically the same process, so while ceiling Sheetrock should always go up first, our "How-To" will be about the walls. It was much easier to take photos of Justin working when I wasn't standing on a ladder and desperately trying to be strong, holding Sheetrock above my head for the ceiling. So, wall sheetrock pictures it is. <br /><br />Justin started by checking to see if the corners of our room were square. Since we have a really old home, the majority of our home isn't square or plumb (which drives Justin <i>crazy</i>) and means that we had to shave down the edges of almost every piece of Sheetrock to properly fit the corners.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/11828863845/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="How to Cut Sheetrock by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="How to Cut Sheetrock" height="427" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7299/11828863845_eccf72505b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />After he shaved down the edges of the sheet or cut it to fit,  Justin held the piece of Sheetrock in place and I put 2-3 screws in to the studs to hold the board using 1-1/4" coarse threaded Sheetrock screws. (For the ceiling, use 1-5/8" coarse threaded Sheetrock screws).<br /><br />After getting a few screws in place to hold the sheet up, Justin would step back and make sure that all corners fit properly. After confirming a good fit, I'd follow behind and put in all the remaining screws. There should be one screw every 12 inches on each stud or one screw every 10 inches for the ceiling rafters. <i>(It's a damn lot of screws)</i>.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/11820587653/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Screwing in Sheetrock by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="Screwing in Sheetrock" height="906" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3733/11820587653_fed5558e4a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />When you get to a sheet that will have a light fixture (for the ceiling) or a light switch or vent cover (for the walls) in it, Justin measured the hole for the light fixture/light switch/etc from both walls, marked that space out on the piece of Sheetrock and cut it out prior to hanging.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/11829278144/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Measuring Sheetrock by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="Measuring Sheetrock" height="428" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3693/11829278144_65204c6660_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Since the light fixture holes are circles, Justin drew a perfect circle using a compass, then cut it out using a keyhole saw to cut the hole out in the Sheetrock. For the vent & light switch holes, he drew them with his t-square to ensure that the lines were straight.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/11828865635/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Cutting Sheetrock by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="Cutting Sheetrock" height="906" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5546/11828865635_5350dc0c8a_c.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Then we hung the sheet, confirmed the holes were lining up with the fixtures that they should, and screwed it to the studs.<br /><br />Repeat 10,000 times (or however many sheets you need to install).  <br /><br />Really, it's not a difficult job as long as you're precise with your measurements, patient with your old, cooked house and have at least one other person there to help you.<br /><br />Here are a few tips & tricks that we can provide based on our experience.  <br /><br /><b>Tips & Tricks for Hanging Sheetrock:</b><br /><br />Hang sheets much like you'd lay brick with stacked seams.<br /><br />Screw in 2-3 screws, step back & look at your sheet to make sure that it's square and plum with your walls.<br /><br />Measure twice, cut once<br /><br />Draw lines on sheetrock to show where the studs/rafters are. Screws should be dimpled in the paper slightly, but not through the paper. (the "paper" is the first layer of sheetrock). If you send a screw through too far, don't worry! Just take it out. You'll be able to fill all your "oops" holes with mud. Trust me, I had plenty of "oops" holes.<br /><br />Have any questions? Let us know! I turned one of our joint drawings into a stuffed toy. Although it didn't work (the toy was thrown across the table and I was told that it "wasn't good") Oh hell. That was my day. But the project was still pretty easy and fun  - providing you have the right materials on hand.<br /><br />Backing up a bit - Oscar and I drawn Monsters together. It's our thing, we sit and he tells me what to draw and I draw it.Then he colours it in, or, dictates to me the colours that I should colour it in. It's just something we do.  (<a href="http://instagram.com/lindsaystephenson" target="_blank">I've posted a few drawing sessions to my Instagram feed</a>) Some Monsters have four heads and three eyes, some have no feet, and wings. It's just this thing we do to pass time. A drawing<br />2. Scanner<br />3. <a href="http://www.staples.ca/en/Avery-InkJet-T-Shirt-Iron-On-Transfers/product_SS2004207_2-CA_1_20001" target="_blank">Iron on Transfer Paper</a><br />4. White fabric (I used table napkins)<br />5. Stuffing<br />6. Sewing machine or, needle and thread<br /><br /><b>Here is how you do it. </b><br /><br /><b>1. Draw</b>. I used a thick sharpie for drawing this one, and on white paper. But whatever, you can do anything you want. Colour it in, keep it black and white - it's totally up to you. The sharpie just gives you a nice thick line, and makes it easy for little ones to colour in the lines.<br /><b>2. Scan it </b>to your computer.<br /><b>3. Print it out</b> on<a href="http://www.staples.ca/en/Avery-InkJet-T-Shirt-Iron-On-Transfers/product_SS2004207_2-CA_1_20001" target="_blank"> iron on transfer paper.</a> Remember to flip the image, so that when you iron it on, it is the right side showing. <br /><b>4. </b>Find a piece of white fabric. I had a bunch of white cotton table napkins that I found at HomeSense, so took one and the monster fit two times over on it. Iron it on. *This is the part where everything could go messy, as sometimes the iron on transfers work, sometimes they don't depending on the heat of your iron. So just be sure to watch this step. Once you have transferred the image to a napkin/fabric, cut around the image, leaving a 1/2 inch to allow for sewing.<br /><b>5. Sew: </b>Place the *good* side that has the image printed on it, inside out - You're sewing the *inside* of the toy, it's backwards. You're going to sew much like you would a pillow. This means you don't see the seams. Once you have sewn around most of the stuffed toy, stop, then flip the toy inside out - so you now have the good image facing outwards.<br /><b>6. Stuff it with stuffing </b>and then sew the remaining open part shut.<br /><br />I did try one monster without flipping him inside out as I did in step # 5. In the image above, the monster on the left was sewn inside out, and the monster on the right wasn't. You can see the difference. Je suis enfin de retour à Paris après presque deux semaines en Suède... The tree is down, the ornaments away. The house is a bit of a mess, and as much as I adore having Oscar home, I am looking forward to preschool starting again next week so we have a bit more of a routine (and I have a few hours to work and tidy the house) I didn't do any resolutions for the New Year, I typically don't as I feel like anytime throughout the year is fine to make changes to your life. That being said, i did make January 1st my cut off for eating total junk and now, I'm back to trying to be healthy.
