DIY Custom Bathroom Shelf

We shared a quick preview of this awesome shelf <strike>we</strike> Justin built in the Master Bathroom on yesterday's post about how to hang the bathroom mirror without brackets. So today we're here to share how we DIY'ed this custom shelf in our bathroom.<br /><br />I was inspired by <a href="http://www.houzz.com/photos/619293/Master-Bathroom-modern-bathroom-atlanta" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this bathroom's ledge</a> under the mirror and thought that it would bring a nice, modern feel to the room and give us some extra space to store things.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/14053535628" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DIY Custom Bathroom Shelf by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="DIY Custom Bathroom Shelf" height="1200" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5314/14053535628_e3352352f8_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />Since Home Depot didn't have a 1-1/2" thick pine, Justin glued two pieces of 3/4"' pine together to make the thickness that we wanted for the shelf. You can <i>kind of</i> tell from the photos below that this is two pieces of wood glued together...<br /><br />He then cut the pieces to 4'1" length and sanded everything down nice and smooth so you could barely tell it wasn't naturally that thickness.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/14237744901" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Building the Shelf Thickness by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="Building the Shelf Thickness" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5529/14237744901_e718f89933_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />I then pre-stained, stained and poly'ed the piece of wood. We had leftover mirror adhesive from <a href="http://homecomingmn.blogspot.com/2014/05/how-to-install-bathroom-mirror-without.html" target="_blank">yesterday's mirror install</a> that Justin knew would work just fine to help hold the shelf in place. How to Install a Bathroom Mirror without Brackets

It's a big week at the Home Coming house because we finally finished our Master Bathroom! Like, donezo. Finished. I can take a shower in peace, without looking around the room at all of the little things that have yet to be done, and it's beautiful.<br /><div><br /></div><div>I'm taking the rest of this week and early next to share the final few projects we had to finish up the bathroom, then share our <i>final</i> reveal!  </div><div><br /></div><div>Today I'm sharing the first project around our modern bathroom mirror. Obviously he's an expert when it comes to things like woodworking, building, framing, etc. But he's even learned things from his co-workers like what type of paint to use for built-in bookshelves (Enamel) and the best kind of painters tape (<a href="http://intertapepolymer.com/Products/Industrial/Type/IndustrialTape/MaskingTape/Pages/default.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Intertape</a> is much stickier than blue painters tape!). And for today's purposes, he knew how the professionals hang bathroom mirrors in the multi-million dollar houses. </div><div><br /></div><div>I've always wanted to see what it was like to be rich. And now with my bathroom mirror, I'm one step closer to their lifestyle. </div><div><br /></div><div>Or something like that. </div><div><br /></div><div>We've been living with the mirror propped up on the sink for the past few weeks and it was starting to drive me nuts. I'm a tall girl and had to do squats just to see myself each morning. So while my legs got an awesome workout, I was ready to get this sucker hung. </div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/14230481971" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Unhung Bathroom Mirror by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="Unhung Bathroom Mirror" height="906" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5554/14230481971_63954ec231_c.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The steps for this project were relatively simple. Genius Justin took two scrap 2x4"s which he cut to prop the mirror up on. These 2x4s had a dual purpose - to ensure that the mirror would be perfectly level, and to give them something to rest on as the adhesive dried. </div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/22623969@N03/14231495782" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Leveling Support for the Mirror by Home Coming, on Flickr"><img alt="Leveling Support for the Mirror" height="427" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5500/14231495782_eefcfa0c56_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>He also marked out where the edges of our vanity & sink were so we could very quickly measure from each side to ensure that the mirror was centered. She has this crazy ability to listen, and come back with thoughtful advice. She has some classic sayings, like my marriage advice "Pick your battles" (which has worked well when becoming a Mom too) and also, "Little Mice Eat Big Holes" when it comes to frivolous spending. So it was with amusement when I saw this book "<a href="http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/like-my-mother-always-said/9781419711732-item.html?ikwid=Like+my+mother+always+said&ikwsec=Home&ikwidx=0" target="_blank">like my mother always said ...</a>" by Erin McHugh at Chapters a few weeks ago, with a collection of women sharing their Mother's own sayings. I's equal parts heartwarming as it is funny. I loved it so much I picked one up for my Mom and one for myself. It's strangely comforting to have beside my table as it's like this little insight into Mother's advice. Some hilarious, reminiscent of days gone by and Grandmothers and their advice. It's just sweet. Anyhow, I recommend it to have beside your bed. It's really quite fun to pick up and read every so often. xo Lindsay
