Make the Bed that Sells the Bedroom

<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad351/2painters/1-blogbedbhgpatterns_zps61014402.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad351/2painters/1-blogbedbhgpatterns_zps61014402.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal">The bed is almost always the focal point of the bedroom. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Make the most of it by staging it to impress buyers and capture their imaginations. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Make it easy for them to picture themselves retreating and relaxing there, especially if it is the master bedroom. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Layer it.</span></b> The staged bed should look layered and interesting. It should look large and accommodating, even if it is just a twin bed. Here are some ways to get that look. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Soften it.</span></b> The bed should look comfortable. That means no sharp corners or edges. I often see MLS photos of beds that look like plywood draped with a bedspread and topped with two sad pillows. A duvet will soften those edges and give that illusion of ultra-comfort.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad351/2painters/P1070994_zps3db2e2aa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad351/2painters/P1070994_zps3db2e2aa.jpg" width="370" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Study color.</b></span> The bedding should coordinate with the room’s color scheme. Although it’s the focal point, it needn’t shout. Pick up the colors you see elsewhere in the room – in the window treatments, wall color, carpeting, rugs, artwork, or furniture pieces. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Location, location.</span></b> Unless the room is L-shaped, the bed should be visible as one enters the room. The bed grounds the room, and the other elements “spin” off it. Buyers need to immediately connect with the function of the room. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Formula bedding.</span></b> If you’re decorating-challenged, bedding comes in sets so that creating a beautifully made bed is as simple as making one purchase that includes the duvet, <a href="http://diyhomestagingtips.blogspot.com/2011/11/faking-bedroom-part-2-diy-bedskirt.html" target="_blank">bed skirt</a>, pillow shams, sheets, and <a href="http://diyhomestagingtips.blogspot.com/2012/06/easy-way-to-make-your-own-decorator.html" target="_blank">decorator pillows</a>.  </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Neatness counts. </span></b>Even though you want the look of a fluffy bed, it can’t look messy. Synthetic comforters are more likely to be smooth, while down comforters can look lumpy and a little too casual. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">This looks silly.</span></b> Avoid too many pillows. Counting the actual sleeping pillows, three is minimum, and seven is maximum number of pillows. People don’t like overly staged homes and a bed full of fancy pillows screams “staged to impress!” </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Crowning glory.</span></b> Always have a headboard. It should be visible. If you can’t see the headboard or you are missing one, there is no shortage of <a href="http://diyhomestagingtips.blogspot.com/2010/08/you-can-make-headboards-from-recycled.html" target="_blank">headboard styles</a> and DIY <a href="http://pinterest.com/barbarapilcher/diy-headboards/" target="_blank">headboard ideas</a>. I can show you <a href="http://diyhomestagingtips.blogspot.com/2013/11/how-to-make-padded-headboard-to-stage.html" target="_blank">how to make an inexpensive headboard here.</a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Finishing touches. </span></b>A bedskirt will let you hide storage boxes under the bed, and gives the bed a finished look. Voilà enfin les photos que notre groupe a réalisé dimanche dernier dans le cadre de la formation de stylisme avec <a href="http://www.lottaagaton.se/" target="_blank">Lotta Agaton</a> à <a href="http://www.beckmans.se/akademin/?page_id=4252" target="_blank">Beckmans Akademi</a> à Stockholm. With the exception of checking work e-mails once a day to make sure I can help customers, I'm not drawn to the computer very much while living with my family. There is less of a feeling of the need to work while here and it feels slightly like a <em>little</em> vacation. I know the feeling isn't mutual for Aubrey - as he's in the thick of the renovation. <br /><br />I've yet to see the progress of the reno in person, but get photos sent to me via e-mail. The boys got the new tub in place (top photo) and bumped out the bathroom wall to create a nook for the new vanity - giving us more floor space in our very tiny washroom. Tomorrow the drywall guys come and things start being put back together. We're a long way away from completion but perhaps inching closer to when it won't be super dirty and Oscar and I can move home. <br /><br />Anyhow, I do love some good photos of rooms that are torn down to the studs. :)

Planning a Bachelorette Party

In honor of my best friend's wedding this weekend, I'm <i>finally</i> sharing the details of her Bachelorette Party that took place in Vegas back in March. And since our photographer friend, E, finally posted photos from the weekend, I have pictures to share too! <i>(yes, e, I just called you out!) </i><br /><br />In March, nine girls flocked to Vegas to celebrate our dear friend Carissa who's getting married <i>this weekend</i>! Carissa & her fiance decided they wanted a joint Bachelor & Bachelorette Party in Vegas. They chose the weekend, the hotel, and the Best Man took care of the entertainment on Friday night. All that left for me was Saturday. Girls night.<br /><br />SaturDAY was low-key with a girls lunch and then free time spent by the pool, shopping or just wandering the strip. I tasked each of the girls to bring one piece of lingerie that they would wear themselves. Each girl got a fun eye mask with a cheeky adjective on it.  And boy were those eye masks a hit!
